About Double Amaryllis

Double amaryllis produce enormous, heavily petalled trumpet-shaped blooms that are truly jaw-dropping — each flower can reach 6 to 8 inches across with twice the petals of standard amaryllis. Available in dramatic reds, pinks, salmons, burgundy, light pinks, yellows, and blues, they're one of the most spectacular flowers for indoor winter display. A single bulb typically produces 2 to 3 flower stalks with 3 to 4 blooms each.

Planting for Indoor Display

Plant the bulb in a pot just slightly larger than the bulb itself — amaryllis bloom best when slightly pot-bound. Use well-draining potting mix. Position the bulb with the top third above the soil line. Water once after planting, then sparingly until you see a green shoot emerging. Place in a bright, warm location (68-75°F). The flower stalk typically appears within 4 to 6 weeks.

Care During Bloom

Once the stalk is growing, water more regularly, keeping soil evenly moist but not soggy. Rotate the pot periodically, as the stalk will lean toward light. When blooms open, move to a cooler spot (65°F) with indirect light to extend the display — blooms can last 2 to 3 weeks in cool conditions. Stake tall stalks if they become top-heavy.

Reblooming

After flowers fade, cut the stalk to 2 inches but leave all foliage intact. Move the plant to a sunny window and continue watering and feeding with a balanced fertilizer every 2 weeks. The leaves are recharging the bulb for next year. In summer, you can move the pot outdoors to a sunny spot. In early fall, stop watering and let the foliage die back naturally. Store the dormant bulb in a cool, dark place (50-55°F) for 8 to 10 weeks. Then repot or top-dress with fresh soil and restart the process.

Gifting & Display

Amaryllis bulbs make extraordinary gifts — they're virtually foolproof to grow and produce a dramatic show. Pair potted amaryllis with preserved flower displays for a living-and-lasting gift combination. Multiple bulbs planted in a long, low planter create a stunning holiday centerpiece.
