About French Marigolds

French marigolds (Tagetes patula) are compact, bushy annuals that deliver cheerful blooms in warm shades of gold, orange, and mahogany from early summer through frost. Growing 8 to 12 inches tall, they're perfect for borders, containers, and companion planting with vegetables. They're naturally pest-deterrent — their roots release a substance that repels nematodes, and their strong scent discourages aphids and whiteflies.

Starting from Seed

French marigolds are among the easiest flowers to grow from seed. Start indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost, or direct sow after all danger of frost has passed. Sow seeds 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep in moist seed-starting mix. Maintain soil temperature at 70-75°F. Germination is fast and reliable — expect sprouts in 7 to 14 days. Seedlings need strong light immediately upon emerging; place under grow lights or in a very sunny window to prevent leggy, weak growth.

Planting Out

Transplant after all frost danger has passed. Choose a spot with full sun — marigolds bloom most prolifically with 6+ hours of direct sunlight. Space plants 8 to 10 inches apart in well-drained soil. Marigolds tolerate poor to average soil and actually bloom better without rich amendments. Avoid heavy, wet clay. They handle heat and humidity well, making them reliable performers in southern gardens.

Watering & Feeding

Water moderately — about 1 inch per week. Allow soil to dry slightly between waterings; marigolds are somewhat drought-tolerant once established and dislike soggy roots. Avoid overhead watering, which can cause flower petals to rot in humid weather. A light application of balanced fertilizer at planting time is sufficient — over-fertilizing produces lush foliage at the expense of flowers.

Ongoing Care

Deadhead spent flowers regularly to keep blooms coming all season. Pinch young plants when they reach 6 inches tall to encourage bushier growth. French marigolds are largely pest-free. They make excellent companions for vegetable gardens, particularly alongside tomatoes, peppers, and beans. In the flower garden, they pair well with petunias, annual phlox, and nasturtiums for a bright, warm-colored border.
